Course Overview
This course fulfills the federal hazardous materials training requirements under 49 CFR Part 172, Subpart H. It provides employees with the knowledge needed to recognize hazardous materials, understand their regulatory responsibilities, and respond appropriately to incidents without performing response, cleanup, or restoration activities.
Training Philosophy
Your job is not response, cleanup, or restoration. Your job is to recognize the hazard, protect yourself and others, secure the area, and report the incident immediately. This training emphasizes role clarity, personal safety, and timely reporting to support effective emergency response.
Who Should Attend
This training is intended for hazmat employees—any individual whose job functions affect the safe transportation of hazardous materials. This includes, but is not limited to:
Shipping and receiving personnelWarehouse, yard, and dock staffSupervisors and managers overseeing hazmat operationsDrivers and carrier-facing staffSafety, compliance, and security personnel
What Participants Will Learn
How to recognize and identify hazardous materials using federal regulationsThe purpose and structure of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR)Basic safety concepts, health effects, and routes of exposureInitial actions to take during a spill or releaseSecurity awareness and how to recognize and report suspicious activity
Regulatory Compliance
This course satisfies the General Awareness/Familiarization, Safety, and Security Awareness training requirements outlined in 49 CFR §172.704. Participants will receive a certificate of completion, which may be used to document compliance with federal hazmat training requirements for a three-year period.
