Course Overview
As part of the upcoming 1st Annual Transportation Critical Infrastructure Symposium (TCIS), the Institute for Homeland Security will offer a free pre-conference Hazardous Materials General Awareness and Familiarization Training on May 4, 2026.
The symposium itself will take place on May 5, 2026, at the Walker Education Center in Huntsville, Texas, and is hosted by the Institute for Homeland Security. The pre-conference training fulfills the federal requirements under 49 CFR Part 172, Subpart H and is designed for professionals whose work affects the safe transportation of hazardous materials across road, rail, and maritime systems.
This session will emphasize hazard recognition, regulatory compliance, use of the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR §172.101), shipping paper accuracy, placarding, segregation, packaging authorizations, safety responsibilities, and security awareness — reinforcing the role of informed personnel in strengthening transportation system resilience.
Training Philosophy
Your job is not response, cleanup, or restoration. Your job is to recognize the hazard, protect yourself and others, secure the area, and report the incident immediately. This training emphasizes role clarity, personal safety, and timely reporting to support effective emergency response.
Regulatory Compliance
This course satisfies the General Awareness/Familiarization, Safety, and Security Awareness training requirements outlined in 49 CFR §172.704. Participants will receive a certificate of completion, which may be used to document compliance with federal hazmat training requirements for a three-year period.
