Ernie Romero is a non-traditional and first-generation college student, currently serving as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Institute for Homeland Security (IHS) at Sam Houston State University. He is pursuing a Bachelor's in Software Engineering, with plans to graduate in Spring 2026. Following graduation, Ernie aims to continue his education by earning a Master's in Data Science.
In his role at IHS, Ernie applies his skills in Python and Artificial Intelligence to analyze networks of first responders, or "blue networks." His research focuses on optimizing disaster response to improve coordination and effectiveness during emergencies.
